From the fading euphoria of the bull market to the crushing despair of an extended bear market riddled with implosions of big players, 2022 was a year of wild happenings in crypto. Despite the whirling chaos, we’ve kept our focus on building what we promised in late 2020–the most advanced NFT protocol in the world, Skybreach metaverse, and a great marketplace that puts the creators first.
With noteworthy progress on the development of the RMRK standard in three different frameworks, we are poised to become the first advanced and chain-agnostic NFT protocol. All going well, RMRK will be available on EVM, Substrate, and WASM. This multi-chain approach is aimed at driving the rapid adoption of the RMRK protocol across different L1s, L2s, and their respective communities.
We also made significant progress towards making Singular the most advanced and widely-available NFT marketplace. New features, UI/UX updates, and big under-the-hood changes have set the stage for Singular to soar in the next year once our core protocol becomes more widely available.
There was also significant progress in our other endeavors, including the successful launch of the Skybreach land sale which blew our minds. Catch these and more below.
RMRK protocol
This covers all updates on the RMRK protocol being developed in different frameworks/languages.
- Created the EVM version of the core RMRK protocol, with 3 of the 5 legos already completed. Two of these legos (MultiAsset and Nestable) have already been merged as EIPs and can now be used by projects building on EVM. The third lego (Equippable) EIP has been sent for review and will likely be merged in early 2023.
- Created various ready-to-use implementations on EVM with different minting methods: lazy minting with native token, lazy minting with ERC20, and pre-minting by collection issuer.
- Finished the development of Soulbound 2.0 Extension Contract, which allows you to add Soulbound 2.0 capability to any RMRK NFT. Where Soulbound 1.0 (Vitalik Buterin’s initial idea) allows you to send non-transferable NFTs to an address/account, Soulbound 2.0 allows you to send non-transferable NFTs to transferable NFTs (thanks to RMRK’s Nesting functionality). Learn more here.
- Created and published tutorials and docs: EVM Sample contracts, EVM MultiAssets Demo, EVM Nestable Demo, Gitbook.
- Away from EVM, we also made significant progress on the development of the RMRK substrate pallets. Thanks to help from the Astar and Phala teams, 3 of 5 core legos (Nesting, Multiresource, and Equipping) have been developed into feature-complete pallets. There is ongoing work towards an initial stable production-ready release.
- With the help of the Astar team, the development of the RMRK Ink! implementation has progressed significantly. We can expect a production-ready release sometime next year.
- The core RMRK protocol saw improved adoption in 2022 with Evrloot, PhalaWorld, Imbue, InvArch, Astar, Gear, and more.
- The $RMRK token was bridged to Moonbeam, Ethereum (with Sushi pools established), Arbitrum, Optimism, and Polygon.
Singular
This covers all updates on Singular, the advanced NFT marketplace.
- We implemented significant under-the-hood changes in preparation for multi-chain support. This includes updates to the inventory, batch transactions, parent NFT preview, and more.
- We implemented a new and improved search feature on Singular which makes it easier than ever to find collections or single NFTs. This is another update that paves the way to a multi-chain Singular.
- We implemented the trading of NFTs created using Parity’s Uniques v1 NFT standard.
- Laid significant groundwork for Singular EVM by creating the factories and registry contracts.
- Singular became the first dApp in the Polkadot ecosystem to integrate a non-invasive multi-wallet selection user experience.
- RMRK NFTs have been integrated by all the biggest Polkadot ecosystem wallets (Talisman, Nova Wallet, SubWallet).
- Singular art and artists were on exhibition at the NFT Tunnel Exhibit during Polkadot Decoded in Buenos Aires.
- Singular was used by artists, collectors, and projects alike, with over 10+ Polkadot ecosystem projects (InvArch, Talisman, SubWallet, Subsocial, and more) minting regular and advanced NFT collections.
Skybreach
This covers updates on the Skybreach metaverse, including tech and non-tech developments.
- We launched the Skybreach land sales on Moonriver with an interactive in-browser map. We are happy to announce that ALL lands have been sold.
- We worked extensively on the Skybreach world and game mechanics, with a specific focus on Chunky Quests, the intended first introduction to the playable world of Skybreach.
Community & BizDev
This covers community outreach and engagement efforts.
- We started the RMRK Roundtable, a biweekly Twitter Space where we talk about NFTs, metaverse, gaming, and other relevant topics with project founders, artists, community, and thought leaders in the space.
- We partnered with Hide.me VPN to mint Guy Fawkes-themed items with real-world use-case and value associated (1 year of Hide.me VPN subscription).
- We partnered with Wagmedia to create awareness about RMRK via sponsored content creation.
- We reignited the RMRKable Ambassador program.
- RMRK sponsored the planting of 2400 trees in Portugal throughout 2022 and minted associated NFTs into the associated Moonglade collection.
- We were at the Metaverse Hackathon in Budapest, providing mentorship to the hackers. The winning project was an NFT dApp based on RMRK that makes it possible to replace colors and shapes of Chunky body parts.
Conclusion–towards 2023
Although we did not move as fast as we wanted to, we are proud of what we achieved this year. Reflecting on the meaning of our 2022 journey, we came to the realization that it was all in service of a greater 2023. We do not mean this as an empty platitude but as what it is, the truth. Most of the work we have done this year has not been directly visible to the community. As such, we went through periods where some concerned community members and fudders used the lack of constant obvious progress as a stick to beat us. We don’t bring this up to complain but to show that we were paying attention and we understood the concerns.
We are deeply indebted to all those who have stuck with us from the beginning. In 2023 we aim to make you all proud. We would tell you how by showing a roadmap for 2023, but we have learned from experience that roadmaps can create a toxic atmosphere when they are not adhered to. Further, if followed to a T by the team, it may lead to the shipping of subpar products just for the sake of fulfilling a roadmap. For this reason, we are willing to let our effort speak for itself when its fruits blossom into public perception. We believe 2023 will be the year of the believers–particularly the RMRK believers.
About RMRK
RMRK is a next-generation NFT protocol that equips NFTs with superpowers, making it possible for NFTs to own other NFTs, change based on conditions, have multiple outputs depending on context, accept emojis, and more.
With these modular NFTs, RMRK enables the creation of the most advanced NFT projects the world has ever seen, while remaining compatible with archaic standards like ERC721 and ERC1155. You can explore this right now on Kanaria, RMRK’s flagship Modular NFT project; join the revolution in Skybreach, a truly decentralized metaverse; or trade advanced NFTs on Singular, the advanced NFT marketplace.
