Multi-Asset NFTs - Enhancing Art in the Blockchain
Enhancing Art in the Blockchain
Enhancing Art in the Blockchain
CryptoArt merges the realms of art and blockchain technology. As blockchain evolves, so too does the art associated with non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Until now, the prevalent approach to incorporating art in NFTs involved a single asset, such as a digital painting, music, film, or book, typically in formats like png, jpg, gif, mov, mp4, or pdf.
While this method has been effective, considering that most forms of art can be shared in a single file, let's imagine the possibilities of having multiple assets within a single NFT. Each asset would have standalone functionality depending on the platform or tool utilized. For instance, a book writer could create an NFT containing the book cover as the main image and include assets like the book's PDF, an audio recording of the author reading the book, and illustrations that complement the story. In this scenario, each asset could be utilized based on the specific need or tool employed. A PDF reader (e.g., Kindle) would access the PDF file, an audio app (e.g., Spotify, Audible) would play the audio recording, and a visual display would showcase the illustrations as slides.
How can artists leverage this feature to enhance the value of their work? I must emphasize that the art itself possesses intrinsic value. However, if there is a means to complement the artwork and contribute to the artist's reputation, why not utilize it? Artists can take advantage of this feature by adding assets such as behind-the-scenes videos, sketches and drafts, alternate versions of the same art, or certificates and awards received. It could even involve both static and animated versions of the artwork. Furthermore, this feature facilitates collaboration across different artistic domains. A musician and a visual artist, for instance, can create a collaborative piece combining animation with music and sound effects, with each element represented as individual assets within the NFT (music as one asset, visuals as another).
This concept has already been realized through RMRK and our Modular NFTs, where Multi-Asset functionality is readily available and easily implemented on the Singular platform.
It's important to note that each asset within the NFT is not an independent NFT; rather, they are integrated within a single NFT. The creator can always add new assets, but if an asset is owned by someone else, its addition requires approval from the owner.
Here are some examples of how artists can utilize Multi-Asset NFTs:
Many artists create static art, but they also experiment with animation by creating GIFs or video loops. With multi-asset NFTs, it becomes possible to include both static and animated versions within the same NFT. This eliminates the need to choose between different file formats, and collectors can appreciate and showcase both static and animated pieces.
Evolution of skills
Artists continually evolve, acquire new skills, learn new techniques, and refine their work. Multi-asset NFTs offer a means to demonstrate this progression. An artist can revisit an artwork created three years ago, enhance it to showcase their improved skills and quality, and add the new version as an asset to the original NFT. Once approved by the collector, the two assets will be associated with the same NFT, effectively highlighting the evolution of the artist's work over time.
Creation process
One effective way to provide credibility and showcase an artist's work is to include assets that document the creation process. This can involve adding initial sketches or a series of sketches that illustrate the journey from the initial concept and drafts to the final result. Imagine having access to such assets for the works of Leonardo da Vinci or Salvador Dalí.
Behind-the-Scenes Videos (BTS)
Behind-the-scenes videos offer further credibility and provide insights into the creation process. Particularly for digital art, many software tools allow artists to record the process while they paint. These videos can serve as assets within the NFT, adding value to the artwork itself.
Here are just a few examples of how artists can utilize Multi-Asset NFTs during their creative process. However, the only limit is one's imagination. At RMRK and Singular, we strive to develop tools that empower creators to unleash their creativity.

RMRK is a next-generation NFT protocol that equips NFTs with superpowers, making it possible for NFTs to own other NFTs, change based on conditions, have multiple outputs depending on context, accept emojis, and more.
With these modular NFTs, RMRK enables the creation of the most advanced NFT projects the world has ever seen, while remaining compatible with archaic standards like ERC721 and ERC1155. You can explore this right now on Kanaria, RMRK’s flagship Modular NFT project; join the revolution in Skybreach, a truly decentralized metaverse; or trade advanced NFTs on Singular, the advanced NFT marketplace.
